Charles Yuen, the Principal of the firm, studied law at the University of Adelaide and was admitted in 1978 to the Supreme Court of South Australia as a barrister and solicitor. He was also admitted to the Supreme Courts of UK (1983), HK (1983) and the NT (1998).
Charles is a 4th Generation Australian Chinese whose great grandfather arrived in Darwin, Australia during the Gold rush in 1887. Charles is a native English speaker. He is also fluent in speaking Cantonese and Mandarin.
Through-out his 33 years career as a solicitor in private practice spanning three jurisdictions in Adelaide, Hong Kong and Darwin, he has acquired specialization in many areas of law including motor vehicle personal injuries, industrial accident claims and medical negligence claims where he mainly represented insurance companies. In the last 14 years he has also specialised in migration law and held an Australian Migration Agent’s licence. He was also a company law lecturer at Charles Darwin University in the NT.
Since 2002 Charles has operated his own migration law practice in Darwin and more recently in Adelaide as a registered migration agent assisting clients to obtain all kinds of visas and helping local businesses to sponsor suitable overseas skilled workers. His migration clients include hotels, mining companies, property developers, cattle stations, building and construction services, restaurants, doctors, nurses, accountants, teachers, engineers and skilled trade people. His clients come from many countries including UK, USA, Ireland, Turkey, Greece, Bosnia, Croatia, Italy, South Africa, Kenya, Liberia, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Taiwan, Japan, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and China. He is well-known and highly respected amongst the different ethnic communities of Darwin. He has helped over 1000 visa applicants in that time to obtain their visas.
He has also successfully represented clients in the MRT, RRT and AAT for merits review of visas that have been refused or cancelled. Charles has often provided pro-bono free legal advice and services to refugees from Africa, East Timor, Afghanistan and asylum-seekers in detention.
In 2006, because of the growing emphasis on English competence for Employer Nominated and Independent Skilled Migration, Charles anticipated that in future there would be a growing demand for English Specialist teachers. He therefore completed studies in Education and obtained a Master Degree in Applied Linguistics majoring in teaching English as a Second Language in 2008.
Since then Charles has taught English to adult migrants under the Department of Immigration AMEP scheme at Charles Darwin University in Darwin and also designed English courses for his 457 visa clients to address English competence in Work, Health and Safety and employee’s rights for successful permanent residence applications.
Charles's prediction about the growing need for higher English levels was confirmed with the legal changes on 1 July 2012 to both the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme and the Skilled Migration Scheme where English has been raised to a higher level.
Charles established a branch office in Adelaide on 1 August 2012 to offer a full range of migration services and using his skills as a Specialist English teacher to provide English Courses to prepare prospective migrants for the OET and IELTS tests. Charles understands how difficult these tough English exams are for non-native speakers and where they might need improvement. His specialised ability to help overseas people rapidly improve their English skills has resulted in a high pass rate for his OET and IELTS students every month. His unique form of coaching has helped many overseas doctors, nurses, dentists and pharmacists to obtain registration and permanent residence in Australia after passing the very tough OET and IELTS tests at a very high level.
